A Centre of Gravity (COG) model for the masterfoods german transport network.
Locations where to include all production to distribution centre (DC) and DC to customer trips.
All collection and delivery points were mapped to a 20 km grid. Actual road distances used to calculate the optimum location of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 DCs. A separate study looked at the situation if 4 different business streams where shipped transported separately.
The current 2 major DCs were located very well but had a sub-optimal split of volumes - based solely on transport costs. A thrid DC was relatively poorly located and could be removed from the network if volume could be increased at the other existing sites.
