An extension to the existing warehouse had been designed by a systems integrator which gave the client an opportunity to change their business operations. Arco wished to have the design tested against their proposed business plans, so Logistics Simulation constructed a simulation using forecasted data. The design was tested for future growth and the simulation reported the facility's ability to meet the proposed change to the business. The reporting included the utilisation of all equipment including conveyors, flows and throughputs for each part of the facility, the number of operators required for carton picking, the individual pick rates of those operators and the number of orders completed against a despatch service level | ||||

The British library have a requirement to store all items copyrighted in the UK, thus there is an ever-increasing requirement for storage. The British Library also wish to vacate some remote sites and consolidate on their main two properties. They therefore require a large warehouse at their site to accommodate items that traditionally took 252km of shelves. Our initial involvement was to assist with the selection of the most appropriate technology. Automated, mechanised and traditional solutions were compared on a 75 year full cost basis, including building cost, equipment replacement costs and energy costs. The fully automated solution was chosen. We were then asked to assist with the preparation of the OJEC invitation and short listing. Following this we prepared the requirements specification, handled the technical liaison for the suppliers and prepared the evaluations and comparisons. Following selection of an integrator, we assisted with the preparation of the functional specification and then prepared a simulation. [Watch a movie of this simulation]

A forklift fleet consisting of core equipment, as well as short-term hire equipment during peak periods, raised concerns about the costly use of short-term hire during normal levels of activity and required further investigation. The optimal fleet size was determined by building a historical model of the warehouse activity and forecasting future growth. A cost model was built showing the balance of core/short term hire. Existing and alternative equipment were evaluated for a reduction in reliance of short-term hire. |
